Karate passes first round of screenings for additional 2020 Tokyo Olympic events!

On July 22nd, the Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (TOCOG) announced the results of the first round of screenings for additional events that the host city Tokyo can propose. Eight International Federations (IF) passed, including karate, baseball, and softball.

Having received the results of the first round of screenings, the World Karate Federation(President / Antonio Espinós) and Japan Karatedo Federation(President / Sasagawa Takashi) held a press conference on that same day from 14:00 at the Nihon-Karatedo Kaikan.

Mr. Sasagawa 、Vice President Shigeo Kurihara of the JAPAN KARATEDO FEDERATION , Director Toshihisa Nagura of the WORLD KARATE FEDERATION, and Mr. Antonio participated in the press conference through video calling. 4 athletes from this year’s national team, Araga Ryutaro、Kiyuna Ryo、Someya Kayo、Uekusa Ayumi, were also present, and spoke of their ambitions for the Olympics.

Furthermore, the IFs that make it through the last screening will make presentations at a hearing in Tokyo in the beginning of August. The final candidates will be proposed to the IOC by September 30.
